Unlimited plans
Unlimited Japan plans cost much more. For one week, Airalo charges $26.50, Nomad $25, Ubigi $25 (8 days) and Holafly $27.50. For 15 days, Airalo charges $48, Saily $48.99 (5 GB per day at full speed) and Holafly $50.50. Holafly limits hotspot use to 1 GB a day. For most trips, a 10–20 GB fixed plan costs a third or less of an unlimited plan.
How much data do you need in Japan?
- Up to a week, maps and messaging: 3–5 GB.
- Two weeks with social media and some video: 10 GB.
- Remote work, or tethering a laptop: 20 GB, or a top-up when you run low.
Free Wi-Fi in Japanese hotels is reliable, but on trains and in the street you'll depend on mobile data for navigation, translation and QR menus.
Before you buy
- Refunds: GoSIM offers a 7-day refund on eSIMs that haven't been activated.
- Install before you fly: set up the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and switch it on when you land.
- Data only: these plans don't include a Japanese phone number. Use LINE, WhatsApp or FaceTime for calls.
- Compatibility: your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.
FAQ
Is an unlimited eSIM worth it in Japan? Only if you stream a lot or work from your phone for a short stay. For a one- or two-week trip, a 10 GB or 20 GB plan covers maps, translation and social media for a fraction of the price.
When does my Japan plan start? Most plans start counting when the eSIM first connects in Japan, so you can install it at home a few days before you fly.
Can I use the eSIM and keep my home SIM? Yes. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts and set the eSIM as your data line. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid charges.
