eSIM for a short USA trip: 1-day, 7-day and 30-day plans
A layover in New York, a work trip to Chicago, or a week in Florida. On short US trips, roaming charges add up fast, and you usually need maps, ride-hailing, and messages working the moment you land. Here’s how I’d pick a plan by trip length.
Oct. 4, 2026
One day or a layover
For a single day, the US day pass is the one to get: 1GB of 5G data for one day for $1.99, enough for maps, Uber or Lyft, WhatsApp, and email. If you stream or work from your phone, 2GB for the day is $3.99. Staying a few days but using little data? The 1GB plan for 7 days at $2.99 gives you six spare days for a dollar more.
Three to seven days
Expect roughly 300 to 500MB a day of normal phone use without video. For a week, 3GB for 30 days at $4.99 is the plan I’d pick. 5GB at $5.99 suits you if you use your phone for navigation all day on a road trip.
Ten days or more
10GB for 30 days at $10.99 is plenty for two weeks, including some video calls. If you’ll be tethering a laptop, 20GB at $18.99 is safer.
Before you fly
- Check that your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM (most iPhones from the XS onward, and recent Pixel and Samsung models).
- Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, then switch it on when you land.
- Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts if you need them, but turn off data roaming on it.
- The plans are data only, so calls go through WhatsApp, FaceTime, or similar apps.
Coverage
Coverage is good in cities and along interstates. National parks and remote areas can have gaps on any network, so download offline maps before you go.
Plans are refundable within 7 days if the eSIM hasn’t been activated. See all United States plans, or the North America plans if you’re also heading to Canada or Mexico.
