Starting an exchange semester in Switzerland? Install an eSIM before you fly and you’ll have data when you land, for the train ticket, the flat-share chat and the map to your residence. GoSIM’s Swiss plans start at $1.99, and students get 10% off any plan with the code STUDENT10 and a university email.

Short answer: for your first month, 10 GB for 30 days at $7.99 covers maps, messaging and the odd video call home. If you’re here for a whole semester and want one plan for all of it, 50 GB for 180 days is $34.99. Enter STUDENT10 at checkout with your university email to take 10% off either.
Why an eSIM for the first weeks
Swiss monthly contracts usually want a residence permit and a Swiss address, and you get your permit some weeks after you arrive. An eSIM skips that wait. You buy it online, scan a QR code, and it connects as soon as you land at Zurich, Geneva or Basel. Your home SIM stays in the phone, so bank texts and two-factor codes still reach you.
Which plan fits
| Situation | Plan | Price |
|---|---|---|
| First month, light use | 3 GB, 30 days | $3.99 |
| First month, normal use | 10 GB, 30 days | $7.99 |
| Streaming, hotspot for your laptop | 20 GB, 30 days | $13.99 |
| The whole semester on one plan | 50 GB, 180 days | $34.99 |
Most residences and campuses have Wi-Fi (ETH, EPFL and the universities all run eduroam), so mobile data is mainly for your way around town, weekends away and your first days before the flat Wi-Fi works.
Weekend trips across the border
Exchange students travel a lot: Milan, Paris, Munich and Lyon are a few hours by train. Swiss plans work in Switzerland only. For trips into the EU, add a separate Europe plan. Our Europe eSIM guide for travelers from Switzerland lists the regional plans and prices.
How to use the student discount
- Pick your plan on the Switzerland page.
- At checkout, type STUDENT10 in the promo field.
- Enter your university email (for example @ethz.ch, @epfl.ch, @uzh.ch, @unige.ch, @unil.ch or your home university’s .edu or .ac address). The installation details go to that address.
The code works once per university email.
Setting it up
Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, keep it switched off, and turn on data roaming for it when you land.
