What a normal trip costs

A long weekend in Dubai is usually fine on 1 GB for 7 days ($3.99). A week of maps, ride apps, photos and some video is closer to 3 GB ($8.99 for 15 days) or 5 GB ($13.99 for 30 days). If you are not sure, take 5 GB and top up if needed.

Heavy use

If you stream, work from cafes or share photos all day, take 10 GB for 30 days ($23.99). The 10 GB plan for 60 days is only $1 more ($24.99), so pick it if you will be back within two months. 20 GB for 30 days is $40.99. The 50 GB plan lasts 180 days and costs $161.99, which only makes sense for people who live or commute here.

Unlimited and daily plans

These give a high-speed allowance each day, then slow down. Each plan covers 1 day.

For a trip longer than a few days, a fixed-data plan is much cheaper.

Networks

GoSIM's UAE plans use du with 5G. du has good coverage in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the main roads between them.

Local apps and notes

  • Install Careem and Uber before you land. Both work for rides in Dubai.
  • The RTA's Dubai apps and the NOL card cover metro and bus.
  • WhatsApp and FaceTime voice and video calls are often blocked in the UAE. Data and text messages work. If you need to call home, use a regular phone call.
  • Set up your maps and ride apps on Wi-Fi before you leave the hotel.

eSIM vs tourist SIM

A local tourist SIM means finding a shop, showing your passport and swapping your physical SIM. With an eSIM you install it at home and your normal number stays on. You can still get texts to your home SIM for banking codes. The tourist SIM can be fine if you want a local number, but most visitors do not need one.
