Short answer: 10 GB for 30 days at $7.99 covers most trips. Only a few days of maps and messaging? The 1 GB day pass is $1.99, or 1 GB for 7 days at $1.99. Staying a month and streaming a lot? 20 GB for 30 days is $13.99.

GoSIM Italy plans

Prices start at $1.99. Day passes give you a fresh allowance that resets the next day. The 7-, 15- and 30-day plans are one fixed total for the whole period. There is no 7-day plan above 1 GB. For a week with heavier use, a 30-day plan is the way to go.

For a day trip to St. Peter’s from Rome, your Italy plan is the main one. A small Vatican or San Marino plan is an easy extra if you want one.

eSIM or your home carrier’s roaming?

It depends on where your plan comes from, so check before buying.

  • EU residents. Roaming inside the EU is generally treated like home use, so your normal plan may already cover Italy. Look at your plan’s fair-use data limit before you pay for anything extra.
  • Swiss travelers. Some Swiss plans include a small Italy allowance. Swisscom’s blue Mobile S includes 1 GB per month in Italy, and other blue Mobile plans include EU/UK roaming. If your plan doesn’t include Italy, or you run out, roaming data packs cost several times more per GB than an eSIM. Sunrise, Salt and prepaid plans differ, so check your own tariff.
  • US travelers. Most US carriers charge extra for international data or sell a day pass, so an eSIM is usually the cheaper option.

Before you land: apps and tips

  • Trains. Trenitalia and Italo both have apps for tickets and platform changes. Platforms are often announced shortly before departure, so data helps.
  • Validate paper tickets. Regional train tickets bought at the station usually need validating at a machine before boarding. Digital tickets from the apps don’t.
  • ZTL zones. If you drive, many city centers are limited traffic zones with camera fines. A maps app with live data helps you avoid them.
  • WhatsApp. The default way to reach hosts, restaurants and tour guides in Italy. Set it up at home.
  • Phone support. Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. The quickest check is Settings, then look for “Add eSIM”.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much data do I need for Italy?
For one to two weeks of maps, train tickets, messaging, translation and some social media, 5 to 10 GB is usually enough. If you stream video or work online, look at 20 GB. GoSIM Italy plans run from 500 MB per day to 50 GB.
Do I need an eSIM if my plan includes EU roaming?
Maybe not. EU residents can usually use their normal plan in Italy, within a fair-use limit. Some Swiss plans include a small Italy allowance. Check your own tariff first, then compare it with an eSIM.
Does a GoSIM Italy eSIM include a phone number?
No. These are data-only plans. Calls and messages work through apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal.
Which phones support an Italy eSIM?
Any eSIM-capable phone that is carrier-unlocked. If your settings show an Add eSIM option, you’re set.
Can I use the eSIM in other countries on the same trip?
The Italy plan works in Italy. If you’re visiting several countries, a Europe regional plan covers them with one eSIM.
Can I install the eSIM before I leave?
Yes. Scan the QR code at home on WiFi. The plan connects when you arrive in Italy.
